Mozambique needs US$4 billion to maintain roads and bridges over four years, Mozambique’s Minister of Public Works, Carlos Bonete Martinho, said Tuesday in Lisbon.
The minister, who took part in the 8th Portuguese Road Congress, which this year featured Mozambique as guest country, said the ideal funding for his ministry would be US$1 billion per year.
Bonete Martinho said he was negotiating with the Portuguese government to secure the investments needed, which have increased due to plans to expand the water supply and sanitation system and housing construction.
“We have a frozen credit that we are negotiating with the Portuguese government and there is another credit line with a remaining balance that we intend to mobilise,” said the Mozambican minister cited by Portuguese news agency Lusa.
The 8th Portuguese Road Congress, which runs from 12 to 14 April in the Portuguese capital, includes a thematic area called “transport infrastructure policy in CPLP countries” related to reconstruction of road networks. This area features information about planning, quality management, hiring, financing and scientific and technical training.
