Government of Mozambique seeks strategic partner

10 Jul 2018

The Mozambican government plans to accelerate the restructuring plan of Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), the country’s prime minister said on Monday, describing the recovery of the airline flag as, “a priority.”

Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, quoted by Mozambican state news agency AIM, said the government plans to find a strategic partner to recover LAM from the crisis it faces, as a result of its inability to honour its financial commitments.

Last week, about 300 passengers who wanted to travel from Maputo to the cities of Beira and Nampula were left on the ground due to a lack of fuel on LAM’s planes, with the supplier companies demanding payment in advance.

The airline has not been honouring its commitments to suppliers, and that difficulty was admitted by the board of directors in a statement issued last Wednesday.

The Mozambican State Administration for Participation Management, a government entity that manages public companies, on Friday announced the appointment of a commission to manage the airline on a transitional basis following the dismissal of the Board of Directors, decided in an extraordinary general meeting the day before.

The Mozambican press has reported that LAM is facing not only financial problems but also technical problems.
