Mozambique’s National Road 1

23 Jul 2018

The winners of two public tenders from the Mozambican government to make repairs on the EN1 road linking the north and south of the country will soon be announced, Public Works Minister João Machatine told the AIM news agency.

Machatine said that the deadline for bidding on the work to be done on the 123-km section between Pambara in Inhambane province to the Save River was Friday and that the deadline for the 573-km section from the Save until Caia in Sofala province is this 27 July.

The two sections in question are “very deteriorated”, which makes driving difficult and can damage both vehicles and cargo, he explained.

Plans call for granting EN1 concessions to private operators, the minister said, adding that they would be responsible for keeping the roads in good condition, financing their operations with toll payments.
