Indian consortium International Coal Ventures Limited (ICVL) intends to build a coal-fired thermal power plant in Mozambique, where it acquired coal assets from the Rio Tinto group, Indian newspaper the Economic Times reported.
The boards of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) and Coal India Ltd, the companies that originally were part of the consortium and later left it, are being asked to return in order to ensure the success of the thermal power plant proposal, the newspaper said.
These two state companies requested permission to withdraw from the consortium claiming their coal needs were very different from those of steel companies, such as SAIL and RINL.
The main members of ICVL include Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), also known as Vizag Steel and National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), all state enterprises.
The newspaper also quoted a government official as saying that the power plant will have an initial capacity of 200 megawatts, which may later be increased to 2,000 megawatts.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, Thursday will make an official visit to Mozambique, during which he will hold talks with the Mozambican authority on agricultural projects, oil and gas, maritime security, trade and investment. (macauhub/MZ)
